Christmas card

A card used to send Christmas greetings. In England, the custom of sending handmade cards began in the late 18th century, and in the first half of the 19th century, paper with printed borders was sold for use as such. Full-scale Christmas cards with printed pictures and text first appeared in the 1840s. There are several theories about who originated the card, but the most well-known is that it was designed in 1843 by JC Horsley, a member of the Royal Academy, at the request of Henry Cole.

クリスマスの挨拶を送るカード。イギリスでは18世紀末から手作りのカードを送る風習があり，19世紀前半にはその用紙として縁飾を印刷したものが売られていた。絵柄と字句を印刷した本格的なクリスマス･カードの出現は1840年代である。創始者についてはいくつかの説があるが，よく知られるのは，イギリス王立美術院会員ホースリーJ.C.HorsleyがコールHenry Coleからの依頼により1843年にデザインしたものという。
