This is a basic textbook that was popular from the late Middle Ages to the early modern period, and is a type of correspondence. Some say that the author was the monk Gen'e, but the author is unknown. It is believed to have been written sometime between the end of the Northern and Southern Courts period and the early Muromachi period. It consists of 25 letters, with one pair of present and reply letters for each month of the year, and one present letter for leap August. The letters list vocabulary related to all manner of social matters, and cover all the knowledge about social life and productive activities that samurai and common people should be aware of. After its widespread use in the Middle Ages, it entered the early modern period and was compiled and published as a textbook, with educational considerations added for young children and common people, and it was widely used for a long time.

中世後期から近代初頭にわたり普及した初歩教科書で、いわゆる往来物の一種。作者は僧玄恵(げんえ)との説もあるが不明。南北朝末期から室町前期に至る間の作とされている。進状・返状各一対ずつの書状を1年の各月に配し、閏(うるう)8月の進状一通を添えた25通の書状からなる。書状には社会万般の事物に関する単語をあげ、武士や庶民の心得おくべき社会生活、生産活動上の知識を網羅している。中世の普及期を経て近世に入り、教科書として編纂(へんさん)・刊行される過程において、幼童・庶民向けへの教育的配慮も加えられ、長く広く愛用された。
