A port city on the north coast of Chiloe Island, off the west coast of southern Chile. Behind it lies the agricultural and forestry region, and as the commercial and industrial center of the region, it distributes potatoes, wheat, livestock, and timber, and mainly ships timber from the port. Founded in 1769, it was one of the last bases on the Spanish side during the War of Independence in the early 19th century, and is now a resort town. A ferry runs between the city and the mainland, separated by the narrow Chacao Strait, and there is a road leading to Puerto Montt. Population: 33,434 (1990 estimate).
