The memoirs of the Russian writer A. Herzen. A huge autobiographical work spanning half a century from 1812 to 1868, i.e., the year of the author's birth to two years before his death. He began writing in 1854 and completed it 15 years later. Supported by a sense of history that "we are history itself," he first recalls his life as a revolutionary from his childhood, and vividly records the dark period of society from the Decembrist Revolt to the reign of Nicholas I through the prism of his thoughts and emotions. He also vividly brings to light his turbulent life abroad as a "romantic exile" from the 1950s to the 1970s, various historical events, and memories of the many revolutionaries he befriended or fought alongside. Because his works were banned in Imperial Russia, this work was not published in its entirety until 1920.

ロシアの作家 A.ゲルツェンの回想記。 1812～68年，つまり著者が生れた年から死ぬ2年前までの半世紀にわたる膨大な自伝的著作。 54年に執筆を始め 15年後に完成。「われわれは歴史それ自体である」という歴史感覚に支えられて，まず革命家としての自分の生活の歩みを少年時代から回想し，デカブリストの乱からニコライ1世治下の社会の暗い時代を，思想と感情のプリズムを通して鮮かに記録。また，50年代から 70年代までの「ロマン的亡命者」としての波乱に富んだ外国生活，さまざまな歴史的事件，親交を結び，あるいはともに戦った多くの革命家たちとの思い出を，まざまざと浮彫りにしている。彼の著作は帝制ロシアでは発禁となっていたため，この作品も 1920年に初めて完全な形で出版された。
