Antakya - Antakya (English spelling)

The capital of Hatay province, on the southeastern tip of Turkey's Asia Minor peninsula, bordering Syria. Also known as Hatay. It is located on the banks of the As (Orontes) River, which flows from Syria, and is 25 km from the Mediterranean Sea. It has a population of 144,910 (2,000). It originated from Antioch, which was founded around 300 BC. It is a key road transportation point near the border, and is connected to Aleppo and Latakia in Syria. It distributes wheat, citrus fruits, olives, and other products produced within the province. Despite its long history, it has suffered damage from wars and earthquakes, and has few historical sites. It was incorporated into French Syria after World War I, but was restored to Turkish territory in 1939.

トルコの小アジア半島南東端、シリア国境のハタイ県の県都。別名ハタイHatay。シリアから流れるアシ川（オロンテス川）河畔に位置し、地中海からは25キロメートル隔たる。人口14万4910（2000）。紀元前300年ごろに建設されたアンティオキアに起源をもつ。国境に近い道路交通の要衝で、シリアのアレッポ、ラタキアとも通じる。県内で産する小麦、柑橘(かんきつ)類、オリーブなどを集散する。歴史の古さにもかかわらず戦火や地震の被害を受け、史跡に乏しい。第一次世界大戦後フランス領シリアに編入されていたが、1939年トルコ領に復した。
