Pageant - Pageant (English spelling)

Pageant - Pageant (English spelling)

A type of religious drama performed in medieval England. The correct pronunciation is pageant. The script calls it a cycle, and it is a type of parallel stage. In Japan, it is often used synonymously with floats, yatai (dai), and kurumabutai (car stage), and can also refer broadly to outdoor plays and parades.

In the 13th and 14th centuries, various guilds paraded around town corners and squares as part of Corpus Christi celebrations in early June. The carriages generally had two levels, with the upper level used as a stage and the lower level used as a dressing room, separated by a curtain, and also representing hell. Each carriage usually took charge of one scene in a cycle of 48 scenes, and moved to a designated location one after another to perform in front of a waiting audience. The performance lasted a whole day, starting early in the morning. The pageant, which was revived in various parts of England in the early 20th century, was a kind of spectacular procession for city commemorative events. It also had an influence on Japan, and several attempts were made since the early Taisho period, centered around Shoyo Tsubouchi. The production of "Oda Nobunaga" (general director Kaoru Osanai, starring Sadanji Ichikawa II) performed at Chion-in Temple in Kyoto in 1922 (Taisho 11) is particularly famous.
