A light hand-operated boat used in the canals of Venice, Italy. Both the bow and stern are curved up high, and the helmsman stands near the stern and propels the boat with a single oar. A shiny metal ornament is attached to the top of the curved bow, reminiscent of the beak-shaped rostramus (bill) that ancient warships had for ramming enemy ships. The history of the gondola is unclear, but it appears in records dating back to 1094. The streamlined shape of the hull is an efficient shape even from the perspective of modern naval architecture. In Italy, small boats rowed by eight or six oars are also called gondolas. [Torao Shigezai] [References] |Gondolas have played an important role in Venice, where canals are the main transportation route. Today, many of them are used for sightseeing.
