A magical ritual performed in Onmyodo to pray for personal safety. Since the Heian period, when the emperor was to be robed, he would give his clothes to an onmyoji, who would perform a spell on them. The Tales of Uji includes a story of Abe no Seimei robing a certain Shosho while embracing him and chanting a spell to bless him. This corresponds to the goji of esoteric Buddhism, and is generally called nademono. In a broad sense, the magic of stroking a doll used by an onmyoji and letting it fall into a river can also be considered part of the ritual of robing. One theory is that robing is an abbreviated form of henbai, which is also called Rokkojutsu, and the ritual was taught by the Kamo and Abe clans, the heads of Onmyodo, and includes the gesture of stepping on the ground (uho).
