…Martialis stayed in Rome until 98, where he had close acquaintances with such literary contemporaries as Frontinus, Juvenal, Silius Italicus, Quintilianus, and Pliny the Younger. In 98 he left Rome and returned to his hometown, where he published his last collection of poems (now called Book 12 of the Epigrams) in 101. His death was mourned by Pliny the Younger in a letter supposedly written in 104. …
