...Kung fu films quickly had a major influence on action films around the world, and such films as Enter the Dragon (1973) made by the American film company Warner Bros. starring Bruce Lee, Dragon and the Seven Vampires (1974) by Hammer Productions, a long-established British studio of horror films, and films that combined Italian ancient historical dramas (the Hercules series) and Westerns (the Spaghetti Westerns) with kung fu films, were produced in collaboration with other countries, with staff and cast members sent to Hong Kong to mix Eastern and Western genres.In Japan, a karate film was made starring Chiba Shinichi and Kurata Yasuaki. Furthermore, as exemplified by the films starring Jackie Chan (1954-), from Snake in the Eagle's Shadow (1977) to The Young Master (1980) to Project A (1983), kung fu films have maintained their popularity by incorporating related genres such as slapstick comedy and sports films, and in 1980, the Chinese-made film Shaolin Temple became a worldwide hit, proving that the real pleasure of film lies in the action. Even before that, in the mid-1960s, there was a director named Hu Jinquan (also known as King Hu), who used brilliant camerawork and montage to elevate martial arts combat to the level of "dynamic stylized beauty," laying the foundation for the rise of a new style of martial arts film. His film A Touch of Zen (1969) was shown at the Cannes Film Festival in 1975 and won a special prize, earning him international acclaim.

…　〈クンフー映画〉はたちまち世界のアクション映画に大きな影響を及ぼし，アメリカの映画会社ワーナー･ブラザースがブルース･リーを主演させてつくった《燃えよドラゴン》(1973)をはじめ，イギリスの怪奇映画の老舗ハマー･プロの《ドラゴンVS7人の吸血鬼》(1974)，またイタリア製の古代史劇(〈ヘラクレスもの〉)や西部劇(〈マカロニ西部劇〉)を〈クンフー映画〉と折衷させたもの等々のように，各国からスタッフ，キャストを香港に送りこんで東西のジャンルを混交させた合作も行われ，日本でも千葉真一，倉田保昭らが主演の〈カラテ映画〉がつくられた。さらに，《スネーキーモンキー蛇拳》(1977)から《ヤング･マスター師弟出馬》(1980)をへて《プロジェクトA》(1983)に至るジャッキー･チェンJackie Chan(1954‐　)の主演作に代表されるように，〈クンフー映画〉はスラプスティック･コメディやスポーツ映画等々の近接ジャンルをとりこんで変容しながら人気をたもち，80年には中国と合作した《少林寺》が世界的大ヒットを記録し，映画の醍醐味がアクションにあることを証明した。またそれ以前にも，60年代の半ばに華麗なカメラワークとモンタージュを駆使して，武術による闘争を〈ダイナミックな様式美〉にまで高め，新スタイルの武術映画隆盛の礎を築いた胡金銓(キン･フーKing Huとも)という監督の存在もあり，75年のカンヌ映画祭では《俠女(英語タイトルは，A Touch of Zen)》(1969)が上映されて特別賞を受けるなど国際的に高く評価されている。…
