…He was of southern Italian descent and served as a praetor, but is said to have refused the position of consul offered by Emperor Augustus. He often pioneered new paths in legal issues, and was also well-versed in philosophy, rhetoric, and grammar. He was highly regarded as a legal scholar even while he was alive, and there is a tradition that he is the founder of the Proclusian school (a lineage of Roman legal studies centered around Proclus). In addition to the "Commentary on the Praetor's Notice," "Responses," and "Collection of Letters," he left behind numerous works on a wide range of subjects, including the "Commentary on the Twelve Tables" and "De jure Priestess," which are said to total 400 volumes, and had a huge influence on later legal scholars. …
