Hokutolite (English spelling)

Hokutolite (English spelling)

It is a variety of barite containing small amounts of lead, native to Beitou Hot Springs in the suburbs of Taipei City, Taiwan, and is radioactive due to its trace amounts of radium. It was named by mineralogist Jimbo Kotora in 1913 (Taisho 2), and was initially treated as a new mineral, but is no longer recognized as an independent species. It is light brown in color and occurs in a powder form or as a fairly coarse aggregate. Similar species have been discovered in Tamagawa Hot Springs in Akita Prefecture, but the lead content is lower than that of the species in its native area.
