An ancient and commercial city located in the Hérault department in southern France, about 70 km southwest of Montpellier. It is located 14 km from the Mediterranean Sea, on a hill on the right bank overlooking the Orbe River. In ancient times it was a Roman colony. It has been destroyed many times in battles, including by the army of Simon de Montfort in 1209. It is a major trading center for wine from Languedoc. It also has industries such as brewing, artificial fertilizers, and chemical products. It has a cathedral from the 13th and 14th centuries. Population: 72,362 (1990).
