A sport unique to Finland, a team game using a bat and ball. It is also called Finnish baseball. After the 1912 Stockholm Olympics, American baseball toured Scandinavia, and it was combined with traditional ball games such as Kuningaspalo and Pitkapalo, and was perfected in 1922 by Lauri Pihkala, a physical education instructor, and others. Two teams of nine players compete against each other using a ball that is lighter than a baseball and a thin bat. The pitcher throws the ball more than one meter straight up from close to the batter, who must immediately run to first base or hit the ball.
