A type of traditional Ethiopian stringed instrument (illustration). It is a large lyre with 8 to 10 strings, strummed with the right hand. Two arms extend upward from the leather-covered sounding body (approximately 38 cm long, 37 cm wide, and 23 cm thick), with a crossbar about 50 cm long at the end of each arm. The strings are stretched upward from a bridge attached to the bottom front of the sounding body, and tuned by tying them to the crossbar. The total length (height) is about 120 cm. Because of its size, it is usually placed on the floor when played. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
