...Generally, it refers to the study of literature, and is mainly focused on bibliography and text criticism, or is sometimes used as a synonym of the Chinese term "cataloguology." Strictly speaking, it should be defined as "the recognition of what is produced by the human spirit, that is, what is recognized," as stated in the German classical scholar A. Beck's "General Survey and Methodology of Philology" (1877). The German word Philologie comes from the Greek word philologia (love of learning), but it gradually became limited to the study of words (erudition), and the English word philology is used in that sense. During the Renaissance, when the classical documents of Greece and Rome were rediscovered, for the humanists of the time, scholarship was nothing other than the study of those documents, and philology became equivalent to classical ancient studies. ...
