…Blessed with the supple movements of an all-round athlete and a beautiful baritone voice, he gained fame as a comedic actor from his time with the Schönemann troupe. He also had a talent for art, a talent for languages, and a lively interest in the natural sciences, and was sociable both at home and abroad. In 1751 he formed a troupe, and his wife, Sophie Schröder (1714-92, mother of the famous actor FL Schröder), took on the tragedies, which were very well received. In 1764, a performance in Hamburg with Eckhof's participation was the highest standard at the time, and laid the foundation for the founding of the Hamburg National Theatre. …
