A former town in Soo District, eastern Kagoshima Prefecture. In the field farming region, sweet potatoes are cultivated, livestock is raised, and tea and tobacco are also produced. There is also a meat processing plant, making it the center of beef cattle production in the eastern part of the prefecture. There is also a sewing factory. In July 2005, it merged with Osumi Town and Takarabe Town in Soo District to become a city, Soo City. 129.09 km2 . Population 20,643 (2003). 鹿児島県東部，曾於(そお)郡の旧町。畑作農業地域で，サツマイモ栽培，畜産を行うほか，茶，タバコを産する。食肉工場も立地，県東部の肉牛生産の中心地になっている。縫製工場もある。2005年７月曾於郡大隅町，財部町と合併し市制，曽於市となる。129.09km2。２万643人（2003）。
