A former town in Soo District, eastern Kagoshima Prefecture. In the field farming region, sweet potatoes are cultivated, livestock is raised, and tea and tobacco are also produced. There is also a meat processing plant, making it the center of beef cattle production in the eastern part of the prefecture. There is also a sewing factory. In July 2005, it merged with Osumi Town and Takarabe Town in Soo District to become a city, Soo City. 129.09 km2 . Population 20,643 (2003). 鹿児島県東部,曾於(そお)郡の旧町。畑作農業地域で,サツマイモ栽培,畜産を行うほか,茶,タバコを産する。食肉工場も立地,県東部の肉牛生産の中心地になっている。縫製工場もある。2005年7月曾於郡大隅町,財部町と合併し市制,曽於市となる。129.09km2。2万643人(2003)。
