...In many cases, they were built as imarets (or külliye), consisting of a complex of shops, warehouses, and lodgings, and hamams (public baths), all of which were funded by private donations from the Ottoman royal family and high-ranking officials. The imarets of Mehmed II, Selim I, Suleiman I, and Ahmed I are typical examples.
