Italian female writer. Born in Rome. First wife of Alberto Moravia. Her short story collection "The Secret Game" (1941) gave her a lucky start. Her long epic "Fiction and Magic" (1948), which expanded "magic realism based on autobiographical elements" into a world of fable that transcends reality, won the Viareggio Prize and solidified her position as a representative writer after World War II. Her works include "Arturo's Island" (1957, winner of the Strega Prize in 1959, translated into Japanese as "Forbidden Love's Island"), a long epic depiction of Nazi-occupied Italy, "History" (1974, published in an unusually low-priced edition from the start for the sake of many readers, which caused a stir), and her poetry collection "The World Saved by Boys" (1968), all of which are powerfully written from the perspective of the small and weak. Her final work, Araceli (1983), fully expresses her mythical and baroque imaginary world, but is also full of deeply personal anguish about death, madness and alienated love. She subsequently attempted suicide, and died in a hospital in Rome, partially paralyzed by the aftereffects of the trauma.
