A small tree of the Myrtaceae family native to the West Indies, Guiana, and Venezuela (illustration). Its English names are bay rum tree, bay tree, and bayberry. It grows to a height of 6-15m, with leathery, obovate to elliptical leaves, about 15cm long, and arranged opposite each other. It produces numerous white flowers in panicles that grow in the axils at the ends of the branches, and the fruits turn black when ripe. It is closely related to allspice and has similar properties. The leaves contain 1-1.4% essential oil and are fragrant. The hair styling product bay rum is made by distilling the leaves of this plant with rum. 西インド諸島,ギアナ,ベネズエラ原産のフトモモ科の小高木(イラスト)。英名はbay rum tree,bay tree,bayberry。高さ6~15mほどになり,葉は皮質で倒卵形から楕円形,長さ15cmほどになり対生する。枝端の葉腋(ようえき)から出る円錐花序に白色花を多数つけ,果実は黒熟する。オールスパイスに近縁で性状も類似している。葉に1~1.4%の精油を含み,芳香がある。この植物の葉をラム酒とともに蒸留したものが整髪料のベイラムである。
