A town in Santo County facing the Sea of Japan in central Niigata Prefecture. The central settlement, Izumozaki, prospered as a post station on the Hokkoku Kaido road, a port for discharging gold from the Sado Gold Mine, and a distribution center for Echigo rice. It developed after the discovery of oil in the Meiji period. It remains a typical town and village, stretching about 6km from north to south. In addition to rice cultivation, flounder is also farmed. 新潟県中部，日本海に臨む三島(さんとう)郡の町。中心集落出雲崎は北国街道の宿駅，佐渡金山の金陸揚港，越後米集散地として繁栄，明治には石油が発見され発展。南北約6kmの典型的な街村形態を残す。米作を行うほか，ヒラメの養殖なども行う。越後線が通じる。良寛の生地。44.38km2。4907人（2010）。
