A town in Santo County facing the Sea of Japan in central Niigata Prefecture. The central settlement, Izumozaki, prospered as a post station on the Hokkoku Kaido road, a port for discharging gold from the Sado Gold Mine, and a distribution center for Echigo rice. It developed after the discovery of oil in the Meiji period. It remains a typical town and village, stretching about 6km from north to south. In addition to rice cultivation, flounder is also farmed.
