...The UK has had close ties with England since its founding, and the Treaty of Friendship signed in 1373 is still valid 600 years later.

It is a founding member of NATO, and its Iberian and Atlantic headquarters is located in Oeiras, a suburb of Lisbon. During the colonial wars, the country had a total of about 200,000 troops, but since April 1974, the number has been greatly reduced.
