Obstructive lung disease

Japanese: 閉塞性肺疾患 - へいそくせいはいしっかん（英語表記）obstructive lung disease

This refers to a group of chronic respiratory diseases that cause ventilation problems due to airway obstruction, and is more accurately called chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The main ones are bronchial asthma, emphysema, chronic bronchitis, and diffuse panbronchiolitis in Japan, which are all different diseases, but they have many common clinical symptoms, respiratory function, and treatments, so this general term has been widely used since around 1960. Prior to this, these diseases were often referred to as chronic emphysema in the United States and chronic bronchitis in the United Kingdom.

気道の閉塞によって換気障害を起こす慢性呼吸器疾患の一群をさし，正確には慢性閉塞性肺疾患という。気管支喘息（ぜんそく），肺気腫，慢性気管支炎，および日本の瀰漫（びまん）性汎細気管支炎がおもなもので，それぞれ異なる疾患であるが，臨床症状，呼吸機能や治療面で共通点が多いため1960年ころからこの総称が広く使われるようになった。これより以前は，これらの疾患に対し，アメリカでは慢性肺気腫，イギリスでは慢性気管支炎の診断名が使われることが多かった。
