Heron
[1] (noun) ① A general term for birds belonging to the family Ardeidae. They resemble cranes with long beaks , necks , and legs , but are slightly smaller, and unlike cranes, they bend their necks in a V-shape when flying. The area around the eyes is bare, and the tail feathers are short. During the breeding season, the feathers on their heads extend long and backward to form a crest. They usually build nests in trees, and feed on fish, frogs, and aquatic insects in rice fields, rivers, and marshes. There are many species, including the grey heron, the black-crowned night heron, the Japanese egret, the Japanese night heron, the great egret, the intermediate egret, and the little egret. The term can also include the spoonbill, which is a member of the Threskiortidae family and has a similar morphology. [1] 〘名〙① サギ科に属する鳥の総称。嘴(くちばし)、頸(くび)、脚(あし)が長くツルに似ているが、やや小さく、飛ぶときにはツルと違って頸を乙字形にまげる。目の周囲は裸出し、尾羽が短い。繁殖期には頭上の羽毛が後方に長くのびて羽冠を形成。ふつう樹上に巣を作り、水田、川沼などで魚、カエル、水生昆虫を食べる。アオサギ、ゴイサギ、クロサギ、ササゴイ、ダイサギ、チュウサギ、コサギなど種類が多い。形態が似ているトキ科のヘラサギなどを含めていうこともある。雪客(せっかく)。《季・春》※古事記(712)上「鷺(さき)を掃持(ははきもち)と為、翠鳥(そにどり)を御食人(みけびと)と為」※枕(10C終)四一「さぎは、いとみめも見ぐるし」② 「さぎりゅう(鷺流)」の略。※わらんべ草(1660)一「入間川の狂言にふしん有、〈略〉此御ふしんは、さぎにも、御尋なされけれども、御へんたうなかりしよし被仰し也」[2] 能楽の曲名。五番目物。各流。作者未詳。帝の命で神泉苑に下り立つ鷺を捕えようとした蔵人が「勅諚(ちょくじょう)ぞ」と言うと、鷺は羽を垂れ地に伏した。帝は御感のあまり蔵人と鷺を五位に叙したというもので、「平家物語」を典拠とする。シテは元服前の少年か還暦を過ぎた老人が直面(ひためん)で演じる。
