A physical laboratory belonging to Cambridge University. It was opened in 1874 with a full donation from the University's Honorary Chancellor, the 7th Duke of Devonshire. It was named after Cavendish, the grandson of the 2nd Duke of Devonshire. Its first director was Maxwell. Since 1895, outstanding physicists from all over the world have gathered here, and under the guidance of JJ Thomson, Rutherford and others, it has become a mecca for physics, producing many Nobel Prize winners.

ケンブリッジ大学に属する物理学研究所。同大学名誉総長デボンシャー公７世の全額寄付により1874年開所。デボンシャー公２世の孫に当たるキャベンディシュにちなみ命名。初代所長はマクスウェル。特に1895年以来，全世界からすぐれた物理学者が集まり，J.J.トムソン，ラザフォードらの指導下に物理学のメッカとなり，多くのノーベル賞受賞者を出した。
