A civil war broke out in 1159 (Heiji 1) at the end of the Heian period. After the Hogen Rebellion, Fujiwara Michinori (Shinzei) and Fujiwara Nobuyori became enemies over Emperor Goshirakawa, with Michinori allied with Taira Kiyomori and Nobuyori with Minamoto Yoshitomo. Nobuyori and his men raised an army during Kiyomori's pilgrimage to Kumano, imprisoning the Emperor and killing Michinori. However, they were defeated by Kiyomori who returned to Kyoto, and Nobuyori was executed and Yoshitomo was killed in Owari. Yoshitomo's son Yoritomo was also exiled to Izu, and the Genji temporarily declined, but in 1167 Kiyomori became the Prime Minister and the Taira reached their zenith. → Related topics: Insei|Genpei War|Emperor Goshirakawa|Sasaki Sadatsuna|Sankyoki|Suminori|Fujiwara Narichika|The Tale of Heiji|The First Century of Japan|Minamoto no Yoshitsune|Minamoto no Yoshihira|Minamoto no Yoritomo|Minamoto no Yorimasa Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
