Ueda [city] - Ueda

Japanese: 上田[市] - うえだ
Ueda [city] - Ueda
The city occupies the Ueda Basin and surrounding mountain areas in the Chikuma River basin in the central-northern part of Nagano Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1919. After the castle was built by Sanada Masayuki in 1583, the city center developed as a castle town and a post town on the Hokkoku Kaido road, and was known for Ueda Tsumugi silk in the early modern period. The city is served by the Hokuriku Shinkansen, the third-sector Shinano Railway, and the Ueda Electric Railway, and until the early Showa period when the Joshinetsu Expressway opened in November 1996, the collection and distribution of cocoons and the silkworm egg industry were thriving, but they have now decreased and the electrical equipment, transportation equipment, and general machinery industries are growing rapidly. The city is rich in Chinese cabbage, cabbage, apples, and walnuts. The Ueda Factory of Japan Tobacco, the Faculty of Textile Science and Technology of Shinshu University, the ruins of Ueda Castle (historic site), and the ruins of Shinano Kokubunji Temple (historic site) are located here. The prefecture is blessed with tourist attractions such as Bessho Onsen, known as the Kamakura of Shinshu, at the end of the Ueda Electric Railway line, Uchimura Onsen in the south, and Sugadaira, known as a skiing mecca in the north. In March 2006, Sanada Town, Maruko Town, and Takeshi Village in Ogata County were incorporated. Area: 552.04 km2 . Population: 159,597 (2010).
