Wessex
The ancient name of the southern part of England. It was one of the seven kingdoms during the Anglo-Saxon period. It is said to have been founded by the West Saxons in 519. It experienced ups and downs after that, but in the first half of the 9th century, King Egbert defeated Mercia and Northumbria, laying the foundation for the unification of England.
