An evergreen tall tree of the pine family, it grows in mountainous areas in central and southern Japan. Also known as Toga or Tsugamatsu. The trunk can reach 30m in height and 1m in diameter. The bark is deeply split vertically, and the leaves grow in roughly two rows on the branches, are flat, linear, and 1-2cm long, but are irregular in length. The tips are slightly concave, and there is only one resin canal in the center of the underside. Monoecious. The cones are drooping. Used as pulpwood. マツ科の常緑高木の一つで,日本の中部以南の山地に生育する。別名トガ,ツガマツ。幹の高さ 30m,径 1mに及ぶ。樹皮は深く縦に割れ,葉は枝にほぼ2列に並んで生じ,扁平な線形で長さ1~2cmあるが長さはふぞろいである。先端がわずかにくぼんでいて,樹脂道は下側の中央に1個だけある。雌雄同株。球果は下垂する。パルプ材として利用される。
