A bird of the order Accipitridae (Accipitridae) (illustration). It breeds in the mid-latitudes of eastern Asia, and migrates to southern China, the Malay Archipelago, and the Philippines in winter, but some winter in southern Japan. In Japan, it breeds in forests on the plains and in low mountain zones, and mainly catches small birds in the air while flying through the forest. It is smaller than the sparrowhawk of the same genus, with males reaching a total length of about 26 cm and females about 30 cm. Like the sparrowhawk, the female is slightly larger than the male. Both sexes are dark gray-blue above, but the undersides of the males are pale reddish brown and the females have white and black horizontal stripes, making them appear to be different species at first glance.

タカ目タカ科の鳥（イラスト）。アジア東部の中緯度地方で繁殖し，冬は中国南部，マレー諸島，フィリピンまで渡るが，南日本で越冬するものもある。日本では平地や低山帯の森林で繁殖し，もっぱら林の中を飛びながら小鳥を空中でつかまえる。同属のハイタカよりも小型で，全長は雄が約26cm，雌で約30cm。ハイタカのように雌は雄よりひとまわり大きい。雌雄とも上面は暗灰青色だが，下面は雄が淡赤褐色，雌が白と黒の横縞で，一見別種のように見える。
