Austrian author. He defected to the United States in 1938 and died in New York. Along with his friends Hofmannsthal and Schnitzler, he was a representative figure of Viennese Impressionism and Art Nouveau. This tendency is clearly expressed in his long novel "The Death of Georg" (1900), which restrains the development of the story and instead tells of the protagonist's moods, dreams, recollections, and introspection in stylized, decorative language. オーストリアの作家。1938年アメリカへ亡命，ニューヨークで死去した。親交のあったホフマンスタール，シュニッツラーと並んでウィーンの印象主義，ユーゲントシュティールを代表する存在。長編小説《ゲオルクの死》(1900)にその傾向が端的に現れており，ストーリーの発展を抑えてもっぱら主人公である〈私〉の気分，夢，回想，内省が様式化された装飾的な言語で語られている。【石丸昭二】
