1866‐1945 Austrian author. He defected to the United States in 1938 and died in New York. Along with his friends Hofmannsthal and Schnitzler, he was a representative figure of Viennese Impressionism and Art Nouveau. This tendency is clearly expressed in his long novel "The Death of Georg" (1900), which restrains the development of the story and instead tells of the protagonist's moods, dreams, recollections, and introspection in stylized, decorative language.
