江戸時代信濃(しなの)国諏訪郡高島(現、長野県諏訪市)に藩庁をおいた譜代(ふだい)藩。藩校は長善館。1601年(慶長(けいちょう)6)、上野(こうずけ)国に移されていた諏訪頼水(よりみず)が諏訪氏の旧領諏訪に戻り、2万7000石で立藩した。諏訪氏はもともと諏訪大社の大祝(おおはふり)の家であった。以後、明治維新まで諏訪氏10代が続いた。2代藩主忠恒(ただつね)は大坂の陣の功績で、18年(元和(げんな)4)に5000石加増され3万2000石となったが、3代藩主忠晴(ただはる)のとき、2人の弟にそれぞれ1000石を分与、3万石となった。18世紀末ごろから養蚕・製糸業が活発となり、1859年(安政6)に横浜港が開港すると、とくに岡谷地区の養蚕・製糸業が商品生産の中心になった。71年(明治4)の廃藩置県で高島県となり、その後、筑摩(ちくま)県を経て76年長野県に編入された。◇高島藩ともいう。
