Sword dance - Kenbu

Japanese:
Sword dance - Kenbu
(1) A classical Korean dance. Four women wear military caps and dance while holding daggers over their heads. It originated from an ancient sword dance, and during the reign of King Yeongjo (1724-77) of the Yi Dynasty, it was modified into two parts, the Tsubasa Dance and the Gongmo Dance, and became a legal dance for court banquets. Today, a modified version of it is performed as a secular dance for public and private banquets. (2) One of the modern Japanese dances. The dancers wear crested clothing and hakama, and dance while brandishing Japanese swords to the accompaniment of reciting poetry. It is said to have begun in the late Edo period, and in the Meiji period, it flourished under the influence of the policies of enriching the country and strengthening the military during the Sino-Japanese and Russo-Japanese wars. In the early Taisho period, improved sword dances and girls' sword dances were performed, adding theatrical elements to it, and became popular as entertainment. It gradually declined after that, and is now passed down among enthusiasts. Famous dances include "Kawanakajima," "Joyama," and "Byakkotai." It is also called "ginbu."
