The oldest merchant bank in the UK. Headquartered in London. It originated in 1763 when Francis Baring (1740-1810) and his brother founded John & Francis Baring & Co. in London. The company changed its name to its current name in 1806 and became a limited liability company in 1891. Initially, the bank was engaged in trading and banking, but in 1817 it undertook the issuance of bonds to pay the French indemnity, and its main business became intermediation for the issuance of foreign bonds. In the 19th century, it formed one of the leading merchant banks, along with Hambros and Rothschild, and dominated the London financial market.

イギリスで最も古いマーチャント･バンク。本社ロンドン。1763年フランシス･ベアリングFrancis Baring(1740‐1810)が兄とともにロンドンに設立したJohn & Francis Baring & Co.に端を発する。1806年には現在の社名に変更され，91年には有限責任の会社になった。当初は貿易業と銀行業を営んでいたが，1817年にフランスの賠償金支払のための起債を引き受けたことから，外国債の発行仲介が主要な業務となり，19世紀にはハンブロースやロスチャイルドとともに，マーチャント･バンクの指導的グループを形成，ロンドン金融市場に君臨した。
