A village in Hamamasu District, Ishikari Subprefecture, western Hokkaido. Population 2,550 (1995). Surrounded by the Mashike Mountains, small rivers such as the Hamamasu River flow into Ishikari Bay. Settlements are scattered on the small flat areas at the mouths of the rivers. Moi, the center of the village, is the site of the Mashike area opened by the Matsumae Domain in 1706 (Hoei 3). Formerly known as a rich herring fishing ground, the main industries of the village today are rice cultivation and fishing for salmon, flounder, and other fish. The northern mountain range and part of the coastline are included in Shokanbetsu Prefectural Natural Park, the center of which is the coast around Cape Ofuyu.
