A general term for gold and silver coins that were newly minted or reminted during the Bunsei recoinage in the Edo period from 1818 to 1812. Gold coins included ichishu gold, ichibu gold, nibu gold, and koban coins, while silver coins included ichishu silver, nishu silver, chogin, and mameban silver. These coins were minted with the aim of obtaining remintage profits (depreciating the purity of coins to make a profit from the difference) in order to overcome the deterioration of the shogunate's finances, and were significantly inferior to older coins such as the Keicho gold and silver, Genroku gold and silver, and Genbun gold and silver coins.
