This mountain range of approximately 3,000 km2 includes Sweden's highest peak (2,111 m), and lies at latitude 68° north, west of the famous iron mining town of Kiruna. The last remaining ice sheets from the glacial period have carved deep U-shaped valleys into the old peneplain, forming cliffs and many cirques. The mountain range is a national park, and is a popular spot for mountain skiing in the spring and rock climbing in the summer. The Kalix River flows out from here and flows into the northernmost part of the Gulf of Bothnia. Narvik (Norway), the shipping port for Kiruna iron ore, is 80 km northwest.
