Hiking - Haikingu (English spelling)

It is generally translated as a walking trip. In the UK, it was used synonymously with walking from around the 18th century, but since the latter half of the 19th century, walking races became popular, and walking and hiking became separate meanings, and outdoor activities ranging from suburban walks away from daily life to light mountain climbing came to be called hiking in general. In Japan, it has been used often to mean light mountain climbing since around 1930 (Showa 5). It is done in the hope of having a relaxing recreational effect, and does not require special training for that purpose. There are various types, such as light mountain climbing, plateau walks, and coastal walks, but since Japan has a lot of mountains, light mountain climbing is the main focus. Unlike sports mountain climbing, light mountain climbing is generally understood to be something that does not require mountain climbing equipment such as ice axes, crampons, and ropes, and does not require skills such as in snowy seasons. In recent years, it is sometimes considered to be synonymous with wandering activities. When carrying out hiking, even if the purpose is hiking, since it is an outdoor activity, it is necessary to pay close attention to changes in nature, especially weather changes, read the map carefully, and make careful plans and preparations. In principle, the same precautions as for mountain climbing apply. Thick rubber-soled lace-up shoes are better than sneakers. Prepare a slightly larger backpack and pack it so that your center of gravity is as high as possible. Don't forget your rain gear. As for how to walk, take a break after the first 20 minutes or so of walking, and then walk at a pace that is comfortable for you.

一般に徒歩旅行と訳される。イギリスでは18世紀ごろからウォーキングwalking（徒歩旅行）と同義に用いられたが、19世紀後半からはウォーキング・レース（競歩）が盛んになったため、ウォーキングとハイキングとは別義になり、日常生活から離れての郊外散歩から軽登山までの野外活動が、広くハイキングとよばれるようになった。日本では1930年（昭和5）ごろから軽登山の意味で多く用いられた。リラックスしたレクリエーションとしての効果を期待して行われるもので、とくにそのためにトレーニングなどを行わないものをよぶ。種類としては、軽登山、高原散策、海岸散策などが広く考えられるが、日本の自然は山が多いので、軽登山が中心となる。軽登山とは、スポーツ登山と違って、とくにピッケル、アイゼン、ザイルなどの登山用具を用いない、また積雪期などの技術を要しないものと一般的には理解されている。近年、ワンダーフォーゲル活動と同義に考える場合もある。実施する際には、目的はハイキングであっても野外で活動する以上、自然の変化、とくに気象変化に十分注意すると同時に、地図をよく読んで、慎重な計画と準備をすることが必要である。原則的には登山の注意と同じことがいえよう。靴はスニーカーより、厚いゴム底の編上げがよい。リュックサックはやや大きめのものを用意し、重心がなるべく高くなるように詰める。雨具も忘れてはいけない。歩き方は、最初20分程度歩いたら一度休み、その後は自分の歩きやすいペースで歩くとよい。
