…It consists of the western half of Mukojima, located across the Onomichi Strait from Onomichi City, and Iwashijima, which lies to the west of Mukojima. Mukojima is considered to be the site of the ancient Utanoshima district (Wamyosho), and in the Middle Ages it was the Utanoshima Manor of Oiryo, to which the area paid annual salt tributes. Hills and plateaus spread out around Mount Takami (283m) in the south, but the north is flat. In the Edo period, the Tomihama salt fields were opened by Tenmaya, a wealthy merchant in the castle town, and salt production continued until the 1950s. …
