The infrared astronomy observation satellite IRAS, launched in January 1983 as part of an international cooperative project between the United States, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands, discovered a moving celestial object on April 25th. It was discovered to be the same as a new 7th magnitude comet discovered on May 4th by Genichi Aratake of Niigata and J. Alcock of the United Kingdom. On May 11th, this comet approached the Earth to within 4.3 million km, moving 40 degrees across the sky in one day. This was the first record since Comet Lexel in 1770, and it was a good opportunity to investigate the size of the comet's nucleus, but even with a large telescope the true size of the nucleus could not be seen, and it was estimated to be less than 5 km in diameter.
