A Buddhist temple in China. There are temples with the same name in various places. Tianning Temple outside the Guang'an Gate of Xuanwumen in Beijing was founded by Emperor Xiaowen of the Northern Wei Dynasty. The existing Tianning Temple tower was built in the Liao Dynasty and renovated during the Ming and Qing dynasties. It is a 57.8m-high, octagonal brick tower with a dense eaves and 13 layers of eaves alone, and is a representative relic of this style, which was mainstream in Buddhist pagodas during the Liao and Jin periods. The Sumeru-style base and the first-storey tower body are particularly high, and the carvings and decorations, such as wooden brackets, balustrades, latticework, gates and windows, sumo wrestlers, bodhisattvas, and cloud dragons, are excellent.

中国の仏寺。各地に同名のものがある。北京市宣武門広安門外の天寧寺は，北魏の孝文帝によって創建された。現存する天寧寺塔は遼代に建設され，明･清時代に修築された。全高57.8m，軒だけを13層重ねた密檐（みつえん）式の八角塼塔で，遼･金時代の仏塔の主流を占めたこの形式の代表的遺構。須弥座式基壇と初層塔身の部分がとくに高く，木造を模した斗栱（ときよう），欄干，格狭間，門窓，力士，菩薩，雲竜などの彫刻･装飾がすぐれる。
