Aden Abdullah Osman

...When the country gained independence in 1960, it was only natural that the two regions united to form a single Somali Republic. After independence, Aden Abdullah Osman, who was elected as the first president, advocated the Greater Somali principle and tried to reclaim other countries' Somali-inhabited areas, such as French Somaliland (now the Republic of Djibouti), eastern Ethiopia (the Ogaden region), and the northern border of Kenya, for his own territory, which led to frequent military conflicts with both Kenya and Ethiopia. In addition, in order to counter Ethiopia, which had received military support from the United States, Somali approached the Soviet Union and received military aid from the Soviet Union.
