French composer and organist. Also known as Lalande. One of the great composers representing the so-called "Versailles School," he contributed greatly to the development of the motet. Born in Paris to a tailor's son, he learned music in a choirboy. In 1683, he was selected as one of the conductors of Louis XIV's chapel, and later became the royal conductor. After the death of Lully, he dominated the court music scene. He composed around 70 motets (grandes motets) for solo, duet, chorus, and orchestra for the king's worship services, and his most famous work is "From the Deep" (1689), which is a magnificent piece of work. His other works include religious music such as "Te Deum" (1684), court ballets, and instrumental music. → Campra/Coupran Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
