A type of silk fabric with vertical ridges. Thin, densely-woven neri silk threads are used for the warp threads, while thick, neri silk threads are used for the weft, creating a plain weave with ridges in the weft direction. Synthetic fabrics include mon-kohaku, which uses jacquard. Kohaku weave is divided into two types, thin kohaku and thick kohaku, depending on the thickness and density of the threads used in the weave. The thin ones are heavier than what is called taffeta, and are used for women's clothing and umbrella fabrics, while the thick ones are almost the same as the so-called Hakata-ori, and are used for obi and hakama fabrics. In Japan, thick amber was first woven in Nishijin during the Tenna period (1681-1684) following Chinese techniques, and was domestically produced. What was once silk fabric has recently become more common, with synthetic fibers being used.
