A gas field located on the coast of the North Sea, about 150 km northeast of Amsterdam, Netherlands. It is also called the Slochteren gas field. This gas field was discovered in 1959, which marked the beginning of the discovery of many gas fields in a vast area stretching from northwestern Europe to the southern North Sea. Its reserves are estimated at about 2.8 trillion cubic ^meters , making it the 10th largest in the world. The gas layer is made of high-quality sandstone belonging to the Permian period of the Paleozoic era, and is about 110 meters thick. It is generally believed that this gas accumulated as a result of the gasification of Carboniferous coal.
