A city on the left bank of the Yangtze River in eastern Sichuan Province, China. Population 1.59 million (1994). Separated and independent from Wanxian in 1950. An important port in eastern Sichuan Province. During the Shu period of the Three Kingdoms period, it was Nanpu County, during the Tang period it was Wanzhou, and during the Ming period it became Wanxian. It is located at a key transportation point on the way east across the Three Gorges into Hubei, and has developed since ancient times as a transit point to Chongqing and Yibin. In 1902 (the 28th year of the Guangxu era), under a treaty with Britain, it was opened as a foreign trade port in 1917, and mainly traded tung oil produced in nearby counties and northern Guizhou, as well as leather and lacquer. 中国,四川省東部,長江(揚子江)左岸の市。人口159万(1994)。1950年万県から分離独立した。四川省東部の重要港。三国の蜀代に南浦県,唐代には万州がおかれ,明代に万県となった。東の三峡をへ,湖北にはいる交通の要所にあり,古来,重慶,宜賓(ぎひん)への中継点として発展,1902年(光緒28)にはイギリスとの条約により,17年外国貿易港として開かれ,近県および貴州北部で産出される桐油を中心に,皮革,漆などが取引された。
