Eichroth, L.

...A term referring to the style of German and Austrian furniture, art, literature, etc. during the Restoration period from 1815 to 1848, as well as the petty bourgeois lifestyle of that era. Originally, Adolf Kussmaul (1822-1902) and Ludwig Eichrodt (1827-1992) created the name of a fictitious author of satirical poems serialized in a Munich literary newspaper around 1855. The term, which implies "honesty," was later used with a somewhat mocking nuance, but from 1900 it was used in the field of furniture to refer to the simple, practical, and warm style of the later period, as opposed to the decorative and powerful Empire style of the Napoleonic era, and around 1910 it came to refer to the entire period from Napoleon to the March Revolution. ...

…1815年から48年までの〈復古期〉におけるドイツとオーストリアの家具調度，美術，文学等の様式，ならびにその時代の小市民的な生活感情を示す言葉。元来は，1855年頃ミュンヘンの文芸紙に風刺的な詩を連載したクスマウルAdolf Kussmaul(1822‐1902)とアイヒロートLudwig Eichrodt(1827‐92)が，その詩の架空の作者の名前として創作したものであった。〈正直者〉の意を内包するこの語はその後やや嘲笑的ニュアンスで用いられたが，1900年から家具調度の分野で，ナポレオン時代の装飾的で力強いアンピール様式に対し，それ以後の簡素で実用的な家庭的温かみのある様式を示す言葉として使われ，10年頃にはナポレオン以後三月革命までの時代全体を指す用い方がなされるようになった。…
