Japanese: 朝野鹿取 - あさののかとり
Asano Katori - Asano Katori
Year of death: 11th June 10th Jowa (11th July 843)
Year of birth: Hōki 5 (774)
He was a nobleman and man of letters in the early Heian period. He was the son of Omihara Takatori, a Shorokui (Junior High Rank) of Yamato Province. Due to his family's low status, he was adopted by his uncle, Asano Michinaga, Shorokui (Junior High Rank), and went to the capital to study at university. However, in 792, he requested to be reverted to his father's family register (his real surname). He was said to have been "very knowledgeable about history and Chinese literature, and had long been familiar with the pronunciation of Chinese characters," and in 792, he was recognized for his knowledge and went to Tang China as a junior record official (junior clerk) in the Tang Dynasty. After returning to Japan, he was involved in the compilation of the Nihon Koki and Dairishiki, while also serving as a tutor to Crown Prince Kamino (later Emperor Saga). In 833, he was promoted to councilor, and was highly respected as a knowledgeable and capable official. His poems and prose were included in the Bunka Shureishu. He was also an expert in court ceremonial songs such as Kagura songs and Saibaraku.
