A gauge that is the standard for measuring length. It is widely used in factories for inspecting and positioning measuring instruments, precision machining, etc. It was invented by CE Johansson of Sweden in 1897. It is a precisely machined rectangular piece of hardened steel with a rectangular cross section of different thicknesses and lengths. The distance between the end faces is the correct dimension (nominal dimension), and a set consists of about 10 to 100 blocks of various types with small dimensional differences in the nominal dimension. The standard set is 103 pieces, but there are also sets of 76 pieces and 56 pieces. By appropriately combining various blocks and making them stick together (ringing), it is possible to create items of almost any dimension. It has high accuracy in parallelism, flatness, and nominal dimensions, and the JIS classifies it into four levels according to dimensional accuracy. It is used for precise inspection of dimensions, calibration and inspection of equipment using the attached holder and jaws.
